The character
Michele Bettega (1853 – 1937)
First Alpine Guide of Primiero, Bettega was a shy man of great tenacity. With his companion Bortolo Zagonel, Bettega led with his companion as many as 47 first ascents in the Pale and the Dolomites, reaching, among others, the peak of Pala di San Martino (2987 m) after a long siege, in 1878. Bettega, initially a shepherd working for the Ben family, later became a chaperone and ultimately one of the most famous and sought-after mountain guides in the area: his clients included the photographers Theodor Wundt and Guido Rey, as well as the English explorer Charles Comyns Tucker.
